The Meaning of Civic Volunteering at Montgauzy

Civic volunteering (bénévolat citoyen) is the beating heart of our association. In an era when cultural heritage can easily become commodified or forgotten, giving one's time to restore an ancient public sanctuary is a powerful act of civic solidarity and intergenerational responsibility. At the Association des Amis de la Chapelle Notre Dame de Montgauzy, volunteers are not treated as unpaid labor; they are recognized as full-fledged stakeholders in a collective public interest mission.

Whether you are a seasoned craftsperson, a university student studying art history, a retired educator, or a local resident drawn to the natural beauty of Montgauzy hill, your participation directly impacts the preservation of this historical landmark. No prior technical construction experience is required—only a genuine commitment to teamwork, historical curiosity, and respect for heritage safety standards.

Available Volunteer Roles & Opportunities

Role 01 • Technical Field Work

Masonry & Grounds Stewardship

Assist our certified mason coordinators with non-structural stone conservation: cleaning mortar joints with wooden scrapers, mixing traditional hydraulic lime pastes, removing invasive vegetation from exterior foundation perimeters, and clearing drainage pathways along the hillside.

Commitment: One Saturday morning per month (09:00 – 13:00).

Role 02 • Cultural Transmission

Public Reception & Educational Guide

Welcome visitors during open sanctuary weekends and European Heritage Days. Guide small groups of citizens through the chapel, explain the historical timeline, share architectural insights, and ensure that every guest enjoys a welcoming, informative experience.

Commitment: Two to four hours during scheduled open days and seasonal weekends.

Role 03 • Historical Research

Archival & Documental Research

Collaborate with our historical documentation committee in transcribing regional archival records, translating medieval Latin or Occitan documents relating to Montgauzy, and building digital catalogs of historical photographs and conservation milestones.

Commitment: Flexible schedule; can be completed remotely or at the departmental archives.

Role 04 • Community Engagement

School & Youth Outreach Coordinator

Help coordinate pedagogical field encounters with primary and secondary schools in the Ariège basin. Assist educators in conducting hands-on stone discovery exercises, distributing educational booklets, and inspiring youth to appreciate cultural stewardship.

Commitment: Weekday afternoons during scheduled school visits (approx. 2 visits per term).
